Hallowscream at York Maze Review 2024

OUR SLASHER REVIEW

After returning to Hallowscream this year, we had another great experience. The night kicked off with roaming characters who immediately set the spooky tone. There are multiple food outlets, rides, a shop, and a stage featuring various performances, including the standout Lil Dribble, who steals the show. This year, there are five scare houses. The Flesh Pot: A butcher-themed maze with dark, grotesque sets and chaotic actors. While not the scariest, it’s fun and has great well-timed scares. The Singularity: A high-intensity, computer/AI-themed maze with a constant stream of scares and impressive sets. It’s tense, immersive, and brilliantly executed. Corny’s Cornevil: A fun house clown maze that prioritizes fun over scares, with quirky features like wonky corridors and moving platforms. It’s lighthearted and full of laughter, though not particularly scary. Necropolis: An Egyptian tomb-themed maze that’s unique for the UK. The sets are amazing, but the scares and actors are lacking, which detracts from the experience. Rednecks Revenge: A new for 2024 maze with great theming but few scares, mostly relying on sudden loud noises rather than actors. It would have benefitted from more actors and variety in scares. Overall, Hallowscream excels in atmosphere and personality, making it a fun event despite not being the scariest. It’s a place we’ll keep returning to for its lively vibe and enjoyable experience.

OUR STALKER REVIEW

After our first visit last year, we had to get back to Hallowscream this year. We arrived and after a quick check in we entered and the scares came immediately from their roaming characters. They ran around scaring everyone they could and it started the night off really well. There are several food outlets, rides, a shop and a stage with various performances throughout the night that shouldn’t be missed. Lil Dribble makes several appearances throughout the night on the stage and absolutely slays the stage.

Roaming character at Hallowscream

This year there are 5 scare houses on offer to guests. Let’s start with The Flesh Pot. This butcher themed attraction has disgusting sets, dark spaces and chaotic actors who bring the terror. The scares are fun and well timed and we had a fun run. It may not have been the strongest maze of the night but it’s one that is fun and scary.

The Flesh Pot sign

The Singularity is the scream parks computer/AI themed attraction and right from the get go the scares are full on. It’s intense from start to end. It tells a story as you work your way through and the sets are awesome. The scares are constant throughout and you never are quite sure where the next actor will be. It’s tense and scary and just a brilliant maze.

Let’s talk Corny’s Cornevil next, their clown maze. This is without doubt one of the most fun clown mazes out there. It’s set inside a fun house and that’s what makes it fun. From wonky corridors to moving platforms, it’s just a laugh. The actors in here aren’t the scariest and they don’t really scare you but what it lacks in scares it definitely makes up in fun and laughter.

Necropolis was their new addition last year and it’s an Egyptian themed attraction where you are exploring a tomb. It’s such a brilliant concept for a scare maze as it’s very unique for the UK. The stunning sets and tight corridors really make you feel like you are exploring a tomb. The only thing that let it down was the scares. It felt like it was severely lacking in them as well as actors.

Lastly we experienced their new for 2024 attraction Rednecks Revenge. This is was a fun attraction to go through with some great theming. There wasn’t really many scares on our run throughs and the scares that did happen were more because of a sudden loud noise as opposed to an actor. It felt like there should have been a few more actors in here as it did feel they were very contained to particular areas.

Rednecks Revenge Sign

We loved Hallowscream. It may not have been the strongest event for scares but it more than makes it up with personality and atmosphere. It’s an event that we will continue to return to as it’s just a fun night out!
